Harriet Anne (Han) Sheppard, Mrs. Ricardo’s sister, is shown here in a curricle (a fast, sporty two-horse carriage driven by the occupant). The photograph was taken at High House, Campsey Ashe, Suffolk, where the Sheppards lived. Private carriages were at this time the preserve of wealthy families who were called “carriage folk”.
